The MAX and universal names do not mean identical LEARN-button coverage in the current LiftMaster list.

The useful difference
L993M appears for white, yellow, purple and red/orange groups. L992U appears in those groups and also the green group. The extra green listing is a real distinction; button count and product naming do not replace it.
How to choose
Check the opener’s color and shape, then use the exact LiftMaster source list for the current product revision before selecting a remote.
Button count comes after protocol
A three-button MAX remote may be convenient when you have several compatible devices, but those extra buttons do not create green-family support where the current chart omits it. Conversely, a two-button universal model can have broader listed LEARN-button coverage. First decide whether your opener is green, white round, yellow, purple or red/orange; then compare how many controlled doors the relevant remote supports in its own manual.
Model-specific Amazon searches
The MAX and universal names have different documented button coverage. Identify your opener family before using either model-specific search.
