A remote that refuses to pair may use the wrong code family even when its frequency looks right.
First check
Identify the opener model and LEARN-button shape or named technology. Compare the candidate remote with the maker’s own chart. If the chart does not include that system, repeating programming attempts will not establish compatibility.
Then decide
Use the official model-specific programming instructions only after confirming the family. A long press on some LEARN buttons may erase stored controls, so avoid guessing at the sequence.
When more button presses will not help
If a white square DIP opener is being paired with a modern white round remote, the shared color is misleading. If a Genie opener uses legacy DIP switches, an Intellicode-only transmitter has the same problem. Review the maker’s code-system chart before trying another sequence. Also check whether the accessory is discontinued or explicitly excluded; those states need a different replacement path.
